開片是說書人因聚眾滋事，被警察（黃霑 飾）帶到了警局問話，借說書人之口講述了粵劇金牌編劇——南海十三郎藝海浮沉的一生。作為江太史公的十三子，江譽镠（謝君豪 飾）自由頑皮，出入名流場所。一次偶然的舞會，他遇到了上海的千金小姐莉莉（吳綺莉 飾），然而雙方有緣相逢，無 份結(jié)親。后來，他跟隨她來到上海，竟落得窮困潦倒。
2年后，回到了廣東的家中，他已被學(xué)校除名。當(dāng)時太史公已經(jīng)年事已高，他便天天去看戲，從不受戲班老板薛老五賞識，到后來成為御用編劇一鳴驚人，人送綽號——南海十三郎。然而，時局動蕩，他到了江西寫劇本慰勞前線戰(zhàn)士，因看不過同行媚俗之作，憤然出手，不歡而散。這時一次車禍，讓他與昔日戀人重逢，可惜她已嫁給老外。十三郎郁郁寡歡，后來入寺修行，卻在一次代人祈福的對話中，得知了自己家道中落的敗局，他瘋了……
